Rummy rules: sequences, sets & a valid hand
Understand common 13-card Indian Rummy through a worked hand, a draw-and-discard walkthrough and declaration checks.

Illustrated guide
Rummy
The game at a glance
13 cards
Arrange the full hand, not only one attractive group.
Sequences & sets
A run in one suit is different from matching ranks across suits.
Declaration
Check every card against the format’s group requirements.
How a round works
- Read the format Identify the joker rule and declaration requirements before the first turn. In the common format, a valid hand needs at least two sequences, including one pure sequence.
- Draw, arrange, discard A turn involves taking a card and discarding one. Recheck the grouping after the draw; an extra card is not automatically part of your final 13-card arrangement.
- Validate the complete hand Confirm the required sequences and place every remaining card into a permitted group. A neat-looking set does not compensate for a missing required sequence.
Rules & examples
| Group | Example | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Pure sequence | 6♥ 7♥ 8♥ | Consecutive ranks, one suit, no substituted joker. |
| Another sequence | 3♣ 4♣ 5♣ 6♣ | A four-card run can still be one group. |
| Set | 9♠ 9♥ 9♦ | One rank across different suits. |
| Set | K♣ K♦ K♠ | Three further cards complete this example. |
Variants & settings
Points format
Results are settled for an individual deal under the selected scoring rules. Read point values and any drop rules before applying a score.
Pool format
Scores accumulate across deals against the format’s threshold. The threshold, elimination and re-entry rules belong to that particular game.
Deals format
A match runs for the stated number of deals. Read how scores decide the final result and how unfinished deals are handled.
Work through an example
Count the example: 3 + 4 + 3 + 3 = 13 cards. It has two natural sequences and two sets. Now remove 4♣ and replace it with Q♦: the second group is no longer a consecutive club sequence. Counting to 13 alone does not establish a valid declaration. This is an original teaching example, not an app hand history.
Tables, limits & timers: what to check
| Setting | Check in the actual rules |
|---|---|
| Variant & entry conditions | Read the exact variant and any eligibility conditions before applying an example from this page. |
| Amounts & limits | If the activity involves money, its actual amounts, fees and limits must come from the operator. This site supplies no stake recommendation. |
| Timers & interruption | Check what happens after a missed turn, interrupted connection or unfinished round. Do not infer a refund or automatic action from the illustration. |
Limits, fairness & product scope

Confusing a set with a sequence
Three equal ranks do not form consecutive ranks.
Leaving a card ungrouped
Check the whole arrangement, not only the first two groups.
Game glossary
- Sequence
- Consecutive ranks of one suit; the exact ace and joker rules must be read with the variant.
- Set
- Cards of the same rank in different suits, subject to the selected rules.
- Pure sequence
- A sequence formed without a joker substituting for a missing rank.
- Declaration
- Submission of the arranged hand for rule checking; finishing an arrangement is not enough if it is invalid.
